Questions 1 - 3 refer to the following conversation:
W: Good evening sir! It looks like you’ve had some time to read the menu - can I bring you anything?
M: Actually, I’m going to wait a bit before ordering food since I’m expecting a friend. He should be here in about half an hour, so for now I think I’ll just have a gin and tonic while I wait.
W: Ok, I’ll be right back. Oh, and if you’d like to tell me your friend’s name, I’d be happy to bring him to your table when he arrives.
M: Oh, thanks. I really appreciate it. His name is Kevin.
Questions 4 - 6 refer to the following conversation:
M: Hey Kelly, have you heard of a printing shop downtown called "Pro Graphics"? Their address is on Riverside Street, but I have no idea where that is. They’re printing some posters for my big presentation tomorrow and I need to go pick them up.
W: Yeah…I’ve heard about that shop, but I’ve never been there either. You should ask Paul. I think he’s used them before for some printing.
M: But Paul has been in a meeting all morning, and I don’t want to disturb him.
W: Yeah, you’re right. I think their meeting is supposed to last all day today. When I came to give the Jack the handouts just a couple of minutes ago, it looked like the atmosphere was very serious and tense. Maybe you should just look it up on Google Maps.
Questions 7 - 9 refer to the following conversation:
M: It looks like we have tons of work to do if we want to meet the deadline next month. It’s pretty obvious we don’t have enough staff.
W: Well, we’re definitely going to need to hire some temporary employees. I think if we hire about a half dozen that should be enough to finish everything before the Christmas season.
M: Well, what do you think about offering an overtime package to our existing employees to give them an incentive to work more over the next few months?
W: That’s a good idea too, especially since we wouldn’t have to spend time training them. But because temporary workers would work for a lower salary, let’s make some cost estimates for both ideas, and then compare notes – ok?
Questions 10 - 12 refer to the following conversation:
M: Hi, I’m calling to get some help with a passport application. Can I pay the application fee with my credit card?
W: Ok sir, I’d be happy to help you. If you go to our website, you can create an account and pay with a credit card before you send in the form. We still need the paper form since we need your photo and signature.
M: Oh ok, that makes sense. Thank you very much.
W: You’re welcome. Paying in advance will speed up the time it takes to get the finished passport sent to you. So, I recommend you to pay it as soon as possible.
Questions 13 - 15 refer to the following conversation:
W: Hi, I’m calling to order some catered food for a party I’m having at my house this Saturday night. I’m expecting about 40 guests.
M: Ok, we can certainly do that. Can you tell me a little bit about what kind of food you would like to have?
W: Well we just have 1 or 2 vegetarians, so maybe a big salad or something with fruit. But I’d also like to have something with salmon, and some grilled beef.
M: Ok. Why don’t you give me your email address and I’ll send you a list of some different dishes and their prices. You can pick the ones you like and you can also give me other details like your address and what time you want us to arrive.
Questions 16 - 18 refer to the following conversation:
M: Jessica, do you know Christopher’s cell phone number? I’ve called his office line several times, but it always goes to his voicemail.
W: Sorry, I don’t. I usually just send him an email. But if you leave him a message saying it’s urgent, I’m sure he’ll call you back soon.
M: Yeah, maybe you’re right.
W: By the way, tell him I need to talk to him too. I need all of the marketing reports from 2011 and I’ll be here until 6.
Questions 19 - 21 refer to the following conversation:
W: So, what do you think about Sophie getting fired? Did you see that email from the managers about it? They said that she was making too many personal calls from the office.
M: Yeah, I thought it was pretty harsh to fire somebody just for that. With all of the new technology and tracking software it’s kind of scary that managers can watch everything we do.
W: I know, it is scary. And I’ve actually been doing a little bit of eBay shopping in the last few weeks, so I hope they haven’t noticed.
M: I’m sure a little bit is ok, especially since they’re making us all work a lot more than 40 hours per week lately. But you’re right, we have to be careful, although I bet that if there’s a problem they’ll give you a warning first. They’re not going to just fire you out of the blue.
Questions 22 - 24 refer to the following conversation:
W: There are only a few weeks to prepare for the painting auction, we should hurry up finishing all the tasks or we’ll be late.
M: Is that on the 12th of the next month? Hmm, we have nearly two weeks left.
W: No! You didn’t update the new schedule, did you? It’s on the 9th of September.
M: Yes, I was quite busy lately. In that case, I’ll contact the printing shop right now and make sure they can print the announcements and catalogues before the end of this week. That way, we can put up posters and mail the announcements next week.
Questions 25 - 27 refer to the following conversation:
M: I’ve been waiting for two days for the wholesalers to come pick up my crop of mangos. They’d better come soon, because they’re starting to spoil.
W: My apples are the same. Since I’m tired of worrying about this every time, I went online yesterday to place an ad for my different products. I’m hoping I can find some new wholesale distributors so I don’t always have to rely on just one company.
M: That sounds like a good idea. Good for you for being so creative!
W: I’ve also been thinking about selling directly to restaurants in the city. If we could just make a few contacts with chefs and restaurant owners, farmers like us could make some really high profit margins since we would be selling directly to the customer.
Questions 28 - 30 refer to the following conversation:
M: Hi, I have a reservation for a table for two under the name ‘Stevenson’.
W: Hmm…I’m sorry sir, but I don’t see your name in the reservation book for this evening. Are you sure you said the 19th when you called and made the reservation?
M: I’m positive. I made the reservation over a month ago because I wanted to have a romantic dinner for my 10th anniversary. And, I called just a few days ago to confirm it, and the person on the phone said everything was ready.
W: Oh, I’m really sorry. I don’t know what’s happened, but it looks like we’ve made a mistake. Let me get the manager, and I’m sure we can straighten this out.
