PART 3 – Conversations - Business - Practice 1

Questions 1 - 3 refer to the following conversation:
W: I am thinking about doing some sort of promotion in shopping malls. We can make up some brochures or flyers to hand out, and get someone to give demonstrations.

M: I can get Laurence to write a catchy jingle for an ad on the radio, and perhaps we can produce a TV commercial.
W: If we drum up a little publicity we can increase brand recognition quickly. I think there’s a big market for this kind of product.
M: Absolutely. Now let’s think about the slogan.
Questions 4 - 6 refer to the following conversation:
M: I have just looked at the figures and our profits are still falling. We must do something soon. Do you have any suggestions?
W: Well, I was thinking that we could start selling our products to tourists who want to buy dolls as typical souvenirs from our region.
M: That’s a good idea! Our target customers may not only be local kids but also children and adults from various places. Our products could also be home decorations.
W: But first, we must study the market, the costs, and the possible profits. We should have all that information ready for the bank in order to ask for a loan.
Questions 7 - 9 refer to the following conversation:
W1: Sarah, should I mail the contract to Ms.Carkin or can I fax it?
W2: Well, she’ll need to sign the original so you’ll have to send it. And you’d better hurry, Helen. The mail pick-up is in fifteen minutes.
W1: OK, I’m ready to go.
W2: That’s great. That way she’ll get it before the 15th.
Questions 10 - 12 refer to the following conversation:
W: I just got a call from the client in Brighton. She would like the parts to be delivered by the 14th of September. Could you make sure they are sent out by 10 this morning?
M: According to the schedule, we still have 3 days left before the shipment deadline. Why is she in such a hurry?
W: I know, but it takes 2 days to send the goods. And she wants to check all the details in order to guarantee a very nice exhibition. In case of any problems, she needs time to return them to be fixed.
M: OK, I see. I’ll take care of it right after I hand in this report to Henry.
Questions 13 - 15 refer to the following conversation:
M: We’re really pleased you’ve agreed to join us on this film project. Your expertise is going to be an asset.
W: Well, I hope so. It’s the technical side I know best – lighting, sound, and electrical stuff.
M: But do you think the script is OK?
W: Yes, I think it’s great! Have you decided where you’re going to shoot? I’ve thought about some locations in town we can use. They’re behind the shopping mall and on a couple of small streets.
